Becoming a freelancer in 4 easy steps
1) Define your service & offering
Turning your skills into a service is the first step to becoming a Freelancer. To do this, you’ll need to understand how your skills can help a prospective client. Try to put yourself in the shoes of your ideal client. What problems do they have, and how can your skills be used to resolve the issue?
It’s essential to recognize that clients are looking for a solution to a problem. To be a successful freelancer, you need to understand the client’s situation and use your service to address their issue. The answer to these questions will be the foundation of how you package your skills as a service. Now it’s time to come up with a brief description of the service that helps you sell your freelance service to companies. Try to concisely explain what you can do, how you do it, and for what type of business/client. Don’t worry about the pric
e yet; we’ll get to that in the later steps.
2) Find your target audience
Determining your primary target audience is crucial when launching a business, or a product or service from your existing business. Geographic, demographic, psychographic and behavioral are the four levels of segmentation that can help define your business’s primary target audience.
For the best research results, divide these audiences into three categories – demography, interests, and purchasing intentions. Audience based on demography: Demographics are socio-economic factors that describe individuals.
Create personas to identify unique segments your target audience.
Use the native audience insight tools on your preferred platforms.
Send surveys or ask for preferences through email campaigns.
Integrate your Campaign Monitor account with other tools.
3) Develop a pricing structure
Once you have clearly defined your service and your target market, it’s time to set your price. The goal is to maximize the amount you’re paid without losing out on potential jobs. So, start by looking at your competitors in the market. What are they charging for similar freelancing services?
In reality, there is no perfect formula for pricing your freelancer services. Many variables can impact the amount that clients will be willing to pay:
- Experience
- Industry
- Project duration
- Deliverables
- Project complexity
- Client’s geographic location
- Urgency
4) Create your portfolio with past jobs
As long as they like what they see you’ll be fine. I usually send out letters, CV and portfolio as separates and have my CV also included in the portfolio.
Your portfolio should contain written and visual overviews of projects and significant pieces of work that you’ve managed or been involved with. It should also include an insight into skills you have, methods you’ve used, the impact of your work, along with any relevant outcomes and / or lessons you’ve learned.
A professional work portfolio, or career portfolio, is a collection of your previous work examples. Your portfolio allows employers to find everything they need to know about you that doesn’t fit on a resume. Work portfolios can come in a variety of formats.
